Making the Most of Holiday Downtime

Seasonal slowdowns this time of year can be both a blessing and a curse. We are so focused on production that it can be difficult to take the time step back and re-evaluate. But while you have the time, why not make the most of it to plan for the coming year.

Look back at the past year. What went well? What could have gone better? Did you get the most out of your employees in the past year? Did you reach your business goals? If you didn’t get the job you wanted or if you feel like you’re spinning your wheels in your current job, what do you need to change?

What needs to change?  How did your employees do this year? Develop a plan to improve performance in the coming year. Consider the hiring decisions you made over the last year and decide if they were the right ones. If you are ready to make a job change, write down what you like and don’t like in your current position. Make a list of your must-haves for your next position.

Minimize meetings. Fewer people are in the office. Many people take time off for family obligations or to use up any remaining vacation or PTO days before the end of the year. Don’t schedule critical meetings if you’re not sure who will be available.

Focus on results. This is not the time of year to get bogged down in process details. Establish clear priorities and share them with employees. Keep them working on the goals that are most important to the company and not on busywork that can wait. Be sure you have the people in place to accomplish your business goals and a plan of attack to train and mentor them.

Save the holiday party for January. The company party can be a fun celebration to show appreciation to your employees, but to some, it’s just one more burden. They must set aside time when they already have obligations with friends and family. A January holiday party allows you to focus on last year’s performance and develop goals for the coming year.

Bring on temporary help. You may need additional coverage this time of year to replace employees who have taken time off. Temporary staffing is a better solution than adding overtime hours to your team. Identify areas where temporaries can help you finish your year on a good note and prepare for the coming one.

The holidays are also a great time to work on your hiring or job search plan for next year. For help in creating a proactive career strategy or finding the right people to add to your team, contact the experts at Morris Bixby.
