Four Tips for Highlighting Project Management Experience on Your Resume

If you work in project management, chances are you move around. A lot. Almost everyone works on a project at one point in their career. It used to be you would apply for a job while still in university. You’d start working at a company as soon as you graduated and you stayed until you retired. Those days are long gone.

In the current economy, it isn’t uncommon for someone to work with three or four companies often across multiple industries during their career. And if you work on projects, that number can be significantly higher.

Because job markets no longer offer the employment security generations before us enjoyed, project assignments are thriving. But even though contract experience is more common in the current workforce, it can still be challenging to highlight these positions in a way that gives you maximum benefit without making you look like a “job hopper.”

Recruiting Agency

When you work with a specialized recruiter like Magnify Resources, chances are they’ll send you out on a few different project assignments during your time with them. Which works perfectly with a strong resume because you can include information about each assignment under the agency name. For example:

Sales Project Manager | Magnify Resources, Omaha, NE | 2017 – Present

Completed three temporary project management placements and contract assignments, ranging from three to six months, providing sales support to senior management throughout the greater Hannibal area.

Prominent placements include
• This is where you can provide details that demonstrate special accomplishments or skills.

The number of placements you choose to list will depend on your work experience. If the biggest chunk of your employment history comes from contract assignments, it’s beneficial to include details from several different jobs. If the positions were more to make ends meet rather than climbing the career ladder, it’s okay to limit your list to one or two.

Using one header, like the example above is also an ideal way to highlight temporary positions. If you have more than one, try to group them under a single Project Management heading.

Customize Your Project Management Resume

With the diversity of jobs and businesses associated with project-based work, you’ll benefit from adjusting your resume so it highlights accomplishments and skills most relevant to the job you’re applying for.

Consider emphasizing your sales skills, rather than focusing on the industry. Demonstrating an ability to learn new things – necessary when working project assignments – will help a prospective employer in the agriculture industry visualize you working with their clients.

By doing so, prospective employers will recognize how your previous sales experience directly relates to their agricultural vacancies.
