This Is Why You Didn’t Hear Back After Submitting an Application

Have you been burning the midnight oil, sending application after application and you’ve heard nothing back? This can be extremely demoralizing, but if it’s happening to you, don’t throw in the towel. There are some common mistakes that job seekers make that keep them from landing interviews; luckily, they are easy to correct. If you’re struggling in your search, you could be making one or more of these errors.

You Don’t Proofread

If you want to be rejected for a job, submit an application that has the wrong name at the top, is loaded with spelling mistakes or uses poor grammar. Read over every resume and cover letter you send out at least twice.  Always confirm you have the company name correct and you have the hiring manager’s name spelled correctly. If you are not sure who you are addressing, use a gender-neutral salutation; don’t say “Dear Sir” or “Dear Madam.”

You Aren’t Customizing Your Resumes

While it’s easy to use the same resume for every application you submit, it’s not wise to do so. Every job has very specific and unique requirements and your resume should align with those requirements. Whether the company uses automated screening software or human screeners, the process is the same; the resume is scanned quickly in search of specific keywords. If your resume doesn’t include those keywords on page one, you won’t receive a call.

You Simply Aren’t a Match

No one, no matter how talented they are, is a good match for every position. However, if you’re consistently applying for jobs you aren’t qualified for, you’ll struggle to land an interview. While you don’t have to check off every box on a hiring manager’s wish list, you should hold the vast majority of their requirements. Make sure if you’re taking the time to send an application, you truly are a match for the post.

You’re Not Working With a Recruiter

Searching for a job is an uphill battle. Sure, we’ve all heard stories of people whose ideal job landed in their lap, but the majority of U.S. professionals must work hard to find what they are looking for. This can be especially challenging for people who work on a project management basis. Short-term projects leave you in a constant state of job searching, and you can’t afford to have too much downtime in between projects.

That’s where a professional recruiter comes in. Working with a recruiter who specializes in project management placements can help ease your stress and increase the odds you’ll find great projects with great employers.
