What Does “Balance” Mean to Your Employees?

The concept of ‘work-life balance’ is a popular topic today, especially as we continue to live in a fast-paced world where people are connected 24/7 and many businesses operate around the clock. If you want to maintain a productive team, make sure your employees are aware of what it really takes to achieve some semblance of work-life balance. If they don’t, they run the risk of being dissatisfied both on and off the job, which can quickly escalate to health problems that prevent them from performing at their best.

Here are some things you can do to encourage work-life balance among your employees:

Provide Wellness Resources

Take the time to educate employees about health and wellness and provide resources to help them achieve their goals. Encourage employees to participate in group fitness activities, set up sports teams within your organization, or pay for some or all of their gym membership costs. This can help your employees maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Watch for Burnout

When employees are overworked or overwhelmed with responsibilities, you may notice excessive overtime hours, low productivity and more mistakes happening in the workplace. Keep an eye out for signs of burnout so you aren’t putting unnecessary pressure on certain employees. Suggest a half day or day off if you sense an employee is overworked and give employees a chance to share their grievances when the work load seems to be heavier than usual.

Promote Flextime

Some employees may need flexible hours to take care of home duties or to simply enjoy some personal time. If you can make arrangements for them to work on a flexible schedule, they may be more productive and happier in the long run. Flextime gives employees a chance to have a life outside of work and give it their all when they are at work. This can reduce stress and improve productivity significantly.
