Relocating for a job can be an exciting time, but no matter how ready you are to tackle a new career challenge, moving is stressful. It is difficult to be focused on a new job when you’re dealing with the stress of uprooting your life and starting over in a strange city or town. If you’re relocating for a job, use these tips to make a smooth transition.
Stay Organized
Much of the stress of moving comes from the logistics of it all. Try to stay as organized as possible. Keep to-do lists for your departure and your arrival, make note of key dates and key contacts, and stay on top of your budget.
Use Relocation Assistance If Offered
Many companies offer relocation assistance. Whether it’s a financial stipend, sponsored house-hunting trips, transportation of vehicles, recommended realtors and rental companies or other services, make sure to ask what types of resources are available to you. Reimbursement for your relocation may be contingent upon the usage of designated professionals with whom your employer has established relationships, so make sure you are clear on all requirements if assistance is available.
Allow Yourself a Transitional Phase
Don’t leap into the commitment of buying a new home in a new city or town without living there for a few months. Ask about temporary corporate housing, and if that is not available, consider renting so you can really get a feel for where you want to ultimately put down roots.
Give Yourself Time to Get Acclimated
Don’t move on a Sunday and start work on Monday. Try to give yourself a week – or at least a few days – to get settled into your new residence, explore the area and practice your commute to work. If possible, visit your new city once or twice before you move, so you’re not coming in totally blind.
Focus on Building a Social Network
Start by leaning on your friends to see if they know anyone in your new town they can connect you with. Also, make use of online services like Meetup to find people in your new area with similar interests and hobbies. Consider joining clubs, sports leagues or religious organizations to start getting out and about and meeting new people.
