Shattering the Perfect Hire Mentality

Sometimes it’s not just about what you are, but where you’re going.

Finding the perfect candidate for your job opening can seem like an overwhelming task. That’s because the ‘perfect hire’ rarely, if ever, exists. So while you may think waiting for the ideal candidate to walk through your office doors is the best choice, you may be missing out on exceptional candidates right in front of you.

Rather than focusing solely on the ‘perfect hire,’ consider evaluating candidates in a different way. Look at those who first meet the core competencies of the position; then consider an applicant’s potential to fill the breadth of the role later on.

Studies have shown additional indicators, such as motivation, insight, curiosity, engagement and determination, can help you identify a candidate with outstanding potential.

Consider these additional three areas when evaluating candidates:

Skill Set

Having good skills means more than a candidate just doing the job; it means someone who does the job well. Ideally, a candidate will possess experience, education, and training, but you may need a little flexibility to find an excellent employee. Consider the position and whether you can potentially live with two out of the three. Because certain aspects can be learned on the job, don’t be too quick to write someone off because they lack a particular skill. A responsible, eager applicant who is willing to put in the effort to acquire additional skills will be a company asset for the long term.

The Person, Not the Resume

A resume will outline a candidate’s achievements and qualifications, but it won’t tell you about who they are as a person. While appropriate work experience is necessary, having a candidate who aligns with your company’s culture is just as important to a successful hire. Does the position you’re looking to fill, require certain soft skills:

  • Do you need a candidate with an outgoing, friendly personality?
  • Would your vacancy be best served by someone quiet and introspective?

A candidate who demonstrates soft-skill character traits during the interview will be a better fit for the job.

Long-Term Potential

Hiring employees is a costly process; make sure you spend your time and money wisely. Looking at everything a candidate brings with them to the hiring process, is an excellent way of spotting potential.
